CONSULTANCY

COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

I have spent every day of my 20-year career in the field of media and communications.

For 10 years, I worked as a television, radio and online journalist and producer for leading broadcast companies in Canada and the UK.

Since 2009, I've been a global communications specialist on climate change, forest protection and sustainable development for international organizations, including UN Environment, the World Bank’s Forest Funds, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the UN's International Trade Centre, and Canada’s Ministry of Natural Resources.

Collaborating with the world’s foremost experts on climate change and sustainable development, I develop influential communication pieces for my clients that break through the noise and affect change.

FEATURED PROJECTS

Since 2022, I have been collaborating with Canada’s Ministry of Natural Resources on strategic communications activities, including the design and implementation of a trilingual, multimedia campaign to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the International Model Forest Network (IMFN). The campaign kicked off in June 2022 with a virtual launch event, which I had the pleasure of moderating.

In 2023-24, I supported the IMFN Secretariat in the development of a global five-year Outreach Strategy designed to position the IMFN and its members as thought leaders and valued contributors in the advancement of sustainable forest landscapes around the world. I also wrote a series of success stories to be featured across the IMFN’s English, French and Spanish websites.

“Healthy seas begin on land.” — In 2022, I had the pleasure of working with the Philippines-based non-profit People and the Sea to refresh their key messaging, resulting in a compelling new website to convey the amazing, community-led ocean conservation work they have been doing since 2015.

WORK WITH ME

Collaborating with the world’s foremost experts on climate change and sustainable development, I create influential communication pieces for my clients that break through the noise and affect change.

PUBLISHED WORK

March 2024- This article is the first of six success stories I developed for the International Model Forest Network, a valued client of mine that is hosted by Canada’s Ministry of Natural Resources.

Throughout 2023, I was pleased to once again be the lead producer of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility’s 2023 annual report, in collaboration with dozens of World Bank contributors and experts. This year, I also help to write the 2023 annual report of the World Bank’s BioCarbon Fund Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes.

April 2023- This is feature article I co-wrote for the World Bank’s BioCarbon Fund Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes, highlighting how farmers across a wide range of agricultural sectors are advancing sustainable, low-carbon production models that are improving livelihoods, social inclusivity and forest protection.

Throughout 2023- I was again lead writer/editor for the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) and BioCarbon Fund Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes (ISFL) quarterly newsletters.

Since 2019, I have managed the content and dissemination of the FCPF and ISFL’s newsletters.

December 2022- This is a feature article I developed for the World Bank’s BioCarbon Fund Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes, highlighting some encouraging public-private sector collaboration to scale up sustainable agriculture in Colombia.

September 2022- For the third year in a row, I co-wrote, co-edited and project managed the FCPF’s 2022 Annual Report, in collaboration with dozens of contributors across multiple countries.

June 2022- I had the pleasure of moderating the 30th anniversary online launch event for the International Model Forest Network (IMFN). Canada and partners launched IMFN at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.

English, French and Spanish recordings of the event are available on IMFN’s YouTube channel.

March 2022- Here’s an article I recently wrote highlighting how sustainable ranching in Colombia has caught the attention of global investment firms— a sign that sustainable business models make sense for companies, communities and the environment.

December 2021- This article I developed with colleagues at the World Bank’s BioCarbon Fund (ISFL) highlights a pragmatic, real-world solution for farmers who currently lack financial resources to make the transition to sustainable agricultural practices.

November 2021- In the lead up to COP26, I put my editor’s cap on to help a World Bank expert craft this blog on the critical link between indigenous land rights and climate action.

November 2021- I co-wrote/co-edited and project managed the FCPF’s 2021 Annual Report, in collaboration with dozens of contributors across multiple countries.

May 2021- In this article for the World Bank’s BioCarbon Fund, I write about how coffee farmers in Ethiopia are revitalizing their trees’ production, while helping to restore the country’s forest cover.

January 2021- On my World Bank mission to Indonesia, I spoke to government officials, community leaders and local farmers across Sumatra Island about their efforts to curb tropical forest loss.

March 2020- This story I edited tells the encouraging story of a former wildlife hunter in Colombia, who has been retrained as a conservationist, and is now assisting biodiversity researchers.

Forest%2Bfor%2Bpeople%252C%2Bthe%2Bplanet%2Band%2Bclimate

March 2020- On this year’s International Day of Forests, this World Bank blog I helped develop encouraged people to take a few hours off COVID-19 coverage to appreciate the gentle giants around the world that keep our planet healthy.

Sustainable+Cattle+Ranch+in+Colombia

February 2020- Another story from Colombia I edited, this time on a sustainable cattle ranching program that is teaching farmers silvopastoral methods that bring together trees, forage plants and livestock to help farmers adapt to the challenges of a changing climate.

In 2019-20, I helped develop a series of guest editorials for the World Bank's BioCarbon Fund Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes. The series explored how large-scale sustainable land-use initiatives can play a key role in broader sustainable development goals.

To save forests, think beyond the trees -published by Brookings Institution

Getting the incentives right on forest protection -published by the UN-REDD Programme

We can't save forests without the private sector -published by the Tropical Forest Alliance

November 2019- Keep your eyes peeled for an emerging superfood from Colombia - the sacha inchi nut, with big benefits for livelihoods and forest restoration.

Zambian Farmers Ease Conflict with Elephants

October 2019- I love when my work intersects with the conservation of these gorgeous animals. This piece I worked on for the World Bank profiles a very simple (and safe) solution to human-wildlife conflict in Zambia.

Sustainable Forest Management

September 2019- Congratulations to client IUCN on their new publication, A Landscape for Everyone. IUCN has long championed the people at the heart of sustainable forest management, and their leadership continues today with this publication. Happy to be a part of the editing on this one!

Protecting the Democratic Republic of Congos Tropical Forests

January 2018- This article is some original reporting I did in the Congo for the World Bank. It profiles how an improved cookstove program in Kinhasa is taking the pressure off primary forests.

In 2018, I designed and executed an external communications campaign for the World Bank's Forest Carbon Partnership Facility to mark their 10 years of support to developing countries working on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation - efforts commonly referred to as REDD+.

Maasai+pastoralist+and+World+Bank+staff+member+Meitiaki+Soikan

March 2017- One of the best parts of my job is getting to interview and write about fascinating people such as World Bank staff member and Maasai pastoralist Nicholas Meitiaki Soikan. Wish I could have spoken with him for hours more.
